art in the park XI

Gigi Kracht, wife of Baur au Lac owner Andrea Kracht, unveiled priceless treasures of modern art for what was already the eleventh time in 2013. Events that afford such a personal, up-close experience of some of the masterpieces of our day are few and far between.

The 2013 event was dedicated to the exceptional work of the late Robert Klippel, “Australia’s greatest sculptor”. Klippel discovered his own personal style in the late 1940s when he encountered a flourishing Surrealist scene in London and, above all, Paris. Figurative images gave way to a passion for the abstract as he transformed bits of wood and other scrapyard materials into constructivist objets d’art.

He later returned to his native Sydney, where he taught at the Alexander Mackie College of Advanced Education, (now the Art Faculty at the University of New South Wales). The prolific sculptor produced some 1,300 works in all, about a dozen of which found their way to the park of the Baur au Lac. What better place to showcase the genius of an artist whose aim was to achieve a fusion of natural and industrial forms? Art in the Park is held in the early summer every year, a few days before the opening of Art Basel.
